About a dozen people are protesting on the Stuart Highway in Alice Springs against the expansion of Olympic Dam mine in South Australia.

They're concerned about the health implications and additional traffic that will be caused by two additional trains full of uranium passing through Central Australia each day.

A protester, known only as Nay, says it's all about raising local awareness.

"We're doing this today because the BHP AGM is happening in Melbourne.

"But the main reason we're hear is really about informing the public, it's about community engagement directly.

"One on one talking to people about the issues and really doing what the government should be doing if they're going to be approving like this.

"This is something that affects us all and we need to know about it."
